Essential Eligibility Criteria and Inherent Risk

Essential Eligibility Criteria

All participants must be able to meet all of the Essential Eligibility Requirements of the trip for which they have registered. Participants are responsible for contacting Northwest Rafting Company if they have any questions regarding their physical abilities and the trip’s demands or to request an accommodation. Each participant must be able to:

  • Breathe independently without any assistance from medical devices.
  • Wear all protective equipment recommended/required by industry standards, including a personal floatation device (max chest size is 56”), shoes while on water, and when appropriate, a helmet.
  • Independently perceive, understand, and follow all verbal and non-verbal instructions given by the guides.
  • Enter or exit the raft independently or with the help of another person.
  • Manage all personal care and mobility, independently or with the assistance of another person.
  • Remain seated and balanced in the raft on a raft tube or equipment with significant jostling and motion while simultaneously being able to maintain a strong grip and hold on to the raft with both hands, and if necessary, with the use of adaptive equipment, which does not fundamentally alter the activity. Adaptive equipment cannot impede nor lessen the effectiveness of the safety procedures or equipment. No one may be strapped nor belted into a watercraft.
  • In the event of a capsize, keep your airway passages sealed while underwater and regain control of your breathing while being submerged through waves or currents, get out from underneath the raft, remain face-up in the water with the aid of a personal flotation device, receive and grip a rescue rope, paddle, or human assistance, and possibly let go of the same; and recognize and make progress towards the shore.
  • Safely navigate shoreline and trail terrain on foot including boulders, trees, low branches, and other vegetation; slippery, uneven, steep, sandy, rocky, or muddy surfaces; and maintain focus and balance on ledges and cliffs, independently or with the help of another person.
  • Enter and exit a multi-passenger vehicle, which may include a bus, van, SUV, or mini-bus, and be able to stay balanced and seated in the vehicle, while the vehicle is moving.
  • Endure exposure to diverse and changing weather conditions, including temperatures potentially above 90 o or 100o F/37o C degrees, extremely dry and/or humid environmental conditions, and intense sun exposure.

All participants will be required to follow the safety policies and procedures of Northwest Rafting Company and its guides, as well as all other policies and procedures. NWRC reserves the right, in their sole discretion, to deny participation to any participant who engages in conduct that is considered by the guides to be unsafe, that risks the safety of other participants or guides, or that is inappropriate.

Inherent Risk

Our trips occur in natural settings which include risks that cannot be eliminated or reduced.  These risks are integral to the adventurous nature of our trips and may cause physical injury and/or death. By choosing to join one of our trips you understand and acknowledge these risks.

All participants will be required to sign an agreement to assume all risks, a release of liability/agreement not to sue, and an agreement to indemnify in favor of Northwest Rafting Company.

Additional Considerations

At Northwest Rafting Company, we want every guest to feel prepared and confident before heading into the great outdoors. Our river trips take place in wild and remote areas where nature’s unpredictability adds to the adventure. Below, we’ve highlighted a few key factors to consider as you prepare for your trip, helping you get ready for an unforgettable experience.

Insects and Wildlife

Our river trips take place in remote wilderness areas teeming with life, including insects and wild animals. You may encounter creatures like bees, wasps, mosquitoes, or even the occasional snake. While seeing animals such as bears or rattlesnakes is rare, it’s important to respect their habitat. If you have allergies to insect stings, bring at least two doses of your prescribed medication, such as epinephrine.

Weather Variability

Out in nature, weather conditions can change rapidly. You might experience both hot sun and chilly rain on the same trip. Our packing list and your guides’ instructions are meant to help keep you comfortable in varying conditions, and we recommend following this guidance. Be prepared for potential challenges like dehydration or hypothermia by bringing the right gear and staying hydrated.

Falling Out of the Raft

Whitewater rafting involves many inherent risks, including the possibility of falling out of the raft during a rapid. While this doesn’t happen on every trip, it’s essential to be mentally prepared for this possibility. Wearing a PFD (personal flotation device) and listening to our guides’ safety instructions will help you feel more confident. If you’re nervous about falling into the river, consider practicing in a pool or lake ahead of time to build your comfort level in the water.

If you have chosen a trip with Class IV rapids like the Illinois River or the Middle Fork of the Salmon River in June when the river level can be higher the probability of you falling out of the raft is significantly higher.

Limited Communication

One of the joys of a river trip is stepping away from the demands of modern life. Cell service and internet are usually unavailable in the areas we explore. Our guides carry emergency communication devices for safety, but if you require contact with the outside world, you’ll need to bring your own satellite phone or texter. Please use such devices respectfully to preserve the peaceful environment of the trip.

Physical Fitness

Preparing for a river trip can be a great reason to boost your physical fitness! While some of our trips are more physically demanding and suited for more active participants, many are accessible to a wide range of fitness levels. Regular exercise and confidence in water will enhance your enjoyment of the experience.

For over a decade, we’ve been helping guests create lasting memories on the river. These considerations are here to help you prepare and get the most out of your adventure. Thank you for taking the time to review this important information!
