Middle Fork FAQ

Our Middle Fork of the Salmon Trip Details (PDF) contain travel information, a packing list, and more. If after reading that you still have questions, they may be answered here.

Do I need previous rafting experience to join this trip?

Not at all! We frequently take first-time rafters down the Middle Fork. At the start of the trip, we conduct a safety orientation and paddle demonstration to ensure everyone feels prepared. However, you do need to meet our Essential Eligibility Criteria.

What is the best time of year to raft the Middle Fork?

The best time depends on the type of experience you’re looking for! The Middle Fork of the Salmon is a free-flowing river, so water levels vary throughout the season and from year to year, based on Idaho’s winter and spring snowpack.

  • May to Early July: Bigger rapids, and the possibility of cooler weather. Wetsuits may be required.
  • July: Good mix of warmer weather and bigger rapids. Inflatable kayaks may be limited.
  • August: The best time for kids, inflatable kayaks and fishing.

What are the tents, sleeping bags and sleeping pads that you provide like?

Can I bring my own camping gear?

Absolutely! Just let us know in your trip registration so we can avoid overpacking unnecessary gear.

I’m flying into Stanley. Will I have to take my suitcase on the river?

No, you won’t! At the pre-trip meeting the night before launch, meet your head guide and let them know about your luggage. They’ll assist you with it.

Will there be cell phone service on the trip?

Cell phone service ends as you leave the town of Stanley on day one and resumes around 4:00 PM on the final day of the trip.

How do we get to the river?

You’ll travel to the river either via a 2-hour bus ride or a 15-minute plane ride. If we fly, there’s no additional cost to you.

Can I fish on this trip?

Yes! Fishing is allowed with a valid Idaho fishing license. Please follow all rules, including using barbless hooks and practicing catch-and-release. If you’d like to fish from a raft, let your head guide know—they’ll do their best to accommodate, though availability may be limited.

What should I pack for the trip, and is there a packing list available?

Our trip details document includes a packing list on page 4. If you have any questions, give us a call—we’re happy to help!
