Pro Guide School Frequently Asked Questions
Our professional guide school provides the education and background needed before applying for a job as a river guide.
Do I need a guide school before getting a job as a river guide?
Some outfitters will hire people to learn on the job. We’ve found that when guides learn on the job they don’t learn some important skills which hurt them in the medium and long term. Attending a guide school before you work will make sure you have systematically learned the key skills required as a guide.
Will you hire me after the guide school?
No. We may invite you to join some of our overnight trips to get some experience but you’ll need both education and experience as a guide before working with us.
Why are you offering a guide school?
We feel that we can offer a professionally run world class guide school that sets prospective guides up for success. This is because our instructors are not only accomplished river guides but effective and experienced whiteater educators.
How is this guide school different from others?
The instructors in the course are both highly experienced guides and trained whitewater instructors. Mark Hirst, in particular, is one of the best river guide instructors on planet Earth.
Our guide schools follow the International Rafting Federation guide training program (GTP) which has been used around the world for decades. Additionally, we will be teaching whitewater rescue according to the Rescue3 Whitewater Rescue Technician curriculum.
Will I receive any certifications after this school?
Yes. If you pass the assessments you will receive an IRF provisional guide award and Rescue3 Whitewater Rescue Technician certificate.
How can I find a guiding job after the guide school?
Our instructors can give you advice and steer you in the right direction during the course. We know which outfitters are looking for guides and we can help make a good match.
